Members of the Greater Manchester Sing Their Name Choir will be taking part in the opera when it is performed from 7pm on Saturday 9^th May in Liverpool.

The Grief Opera shines a spotlight on suicide and the consequent, harrowing grief. Its creators hope it will enable people to have potentially life-saving conversations and to work with their grief.

The events are free to attend and held 10am -12pm and anyone is welcome; professionals wanting to learn more and people who may have been touched by loss both past and present.

The structure is similar each time, a brief educational session on understanding grief and loss – and then time talking about the service and the support they offer. They then allow space for discussion if appropriate, or an opportunity for individuals to talk to a practitioner 1-1.

The exhibition was opened by Liz Twist MP who has personal experience of losing a loved one to suicide.

The Greater Manchester Speak Their Name Suicide Memorial Quilt was the first quilt created in the UK. Eleven other regions went on to create their own quilts with more to follow.

The Speak Their Name Charity has also since been established.

Those who contributed to the quilts could attend the exhibition.

It was the first time all the quilts had been displayed together, and MPs and visitors were able to learn more about the initiative and the impact of suicide loss.

Bolton mum, Katie, who has been travelling with her son Josh to Liverpool for support for quite some time, said

“We’ve been lucky enough to travel to Liverpool, but having Alfie’s Squad here in Bolton means more families won’t have to struggle alone. My son enjoys fun activities with others who understand, and I’ve found my own support with other parents. I’m looking forward to help others like us settle into the new Hub, but we’ll still make the occasional trip to Liverpool to see the friends we’ve been lucky to make.”

We will be facilitating a pop-up event on Monday 1^st September 2025, 10am – 12pm at House of Books & Friends in the city centre, to raise awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 later that month.

This event is open to everyone, including professionals and members of the public.

We recognise the significant impact suicide can have and understand that losing someone to suicide may increase the likelihood of mental health challenges and suicidal risk. Our pop up event is an opportunity to learn more about Suicide Bereavement and how the GM Bereavement Service can support anyone bereaved or impacted by a death. There will also be chance to connect with others, and speak to a practitioner for help or advice.
